ANIMAL WELFARE COURSE

Course Overview: (See also Course Outline, 119kb, pdf)

This course is written and prepared to give Learners the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop skills in the vast area of Animal Welfare. Due to the broad study nature and diversity of animals included, this is considered a foundation course, providing a base line for progression into more specialised areas, including Animal Rehabilitation (as offered by ELISTA Education). The course delivery is based on the ‘Five Freedoms’, a guideline developed for monitoring and assessing animals’ welfare. The course also includes study of relevant animal legislation, personal and professional ethics and the opportunity for plenty of discussion about animals in current affairs!

IMPORTANT: ELISTA Education only promotes positive interactions between animals and people, and the ethical treatment of animals to enhance human lives. We recognise that ‘welfare’ remains a very subjectively evaluated term with huge variation on what is deemed appropriate treatment and utilisation of animals. We aim to promote education and training founded on the belief that all animals should be shown respect, compassion and kindness throughout their lives, knowing that we, as a society have a responsibility and duty of care.

Who is this course for?

The Animal Welfare Course is for anyone that has an interest in the well being of Animals. Whether you are keen to explore the subject area due to a personal interest, to volunteer or are thinking about a specific area of Animal Husbandry or Welfare as a career, then this course is for you!

We do advise the following criteria:

  • You can commit to approximately 80 hours of tutored study and practical skills development (see below for delivery methods).
  • You have additional time available to read subject specific literature and prepare assessment material.
  • You can respect the fact that people’s opinions differ and can be polite in honouring the views and opinions of others within a group.

* ELISTA Education is an equal opportunity provider and provides Foundation Courses without exclusion. Applicants should be aware that this course is delivered at an equivalent to ‘Level 6’ on the National Qualifications Framework (www.nfq.ie), as the Irish Leaving Certificate is at ‘Level 4 and 5’, we do advise at least this level of academic ability. Please contact us if you have any concerns or queries in relation to this.
